Session 9 prep reference — the map, campfire stories, the Pie Mill & the Tser Falls Roc
[IDEA — NONCANONICAL, though this is the direct prep work behind the already-logged Session 8] Source: Map Design Details for Players After Fortune Telling. Kept here as a reference for the reasoning behind Session 8’s beats, in case it needs to be revisited (e.g., if a player asks Ireena a follow-up question about the map).
Session 9 update: the campfire scene planned under The campfire storytelling scene below was actually played out in Session 9 (see Session Log) — substantially as outlined for Eliza and Stanimir’s stories, plus additional unplanned stories from Arturi and Gaille. Ireena’s own story slot was not used. The rest of this section (the map, other quest hooks, the Pie Mill and the Tser Falls bridge) remains GM prep reasoning, only partially touched by actual play so far — see the Key Items updates for what’s been confirmed.
What Ireena can mark on the map
Deliberately budgeted so she isn’t a walking answer key — one pinpoint location, one “somewhere in a specific building” location, and two “one of two possible sites” locations:
- Werewolf den — vague, northwest Svalich Woods (unchanged).
- Von Richten’s flesh-map caches — flagged with X’s; the actual flesh map is still a to-do item.
- Tome of Strahd — Ireena has no location indicator; she doesn’t know it exists.
- Sun Sword — tied to the Amber Temple, but Ireena doesn’t know where the Temple is (capped at “not in one of the cities”); she can identify “the house of the fallen dragon” as the Order of the Silver Dragon/Argonvost’s Holt. Session 9 update: she further narrowed this to an offshoot of the Luna River.
- Holy Symbol of Ravenkind — narrowed to one of two candidate lakes, Lake Luna or Lake Baratok. Session 9 update: narrowed further, in play, to Luna Lake specifically.
- A ghost-tied card — only “somewhere in Castle Ravenloft.”
Other quest hooks
- Vallaki is Ireena’s personal destination.
- No hook yet exists pointing toward the Abbey of Saint Markovia — a gap.
- Arabelle (the doll) is tied to Madam Eva’s fetch quest, in Vallaki.
- “Dinner with the Devil” — the Castle Ravenloft dinner invitation, delivered as a fully optional invite.
The campfire storytelling scene
- Arturi’s story — a metaphorical tale about an old fox being hunted; a coded retelling of Von Richten’s hunt. Flavor only. Session 9 update: told in play as a fox/sparrows/rats revenge fable — a high insight check registered genuine emotional intensity behind it, so this may carry more real narrative weight than “flavor only.”
- Eliza’s raw-module Lugdana/Ravenkind verse — a rework tying it to Lugdana’s Fane-restoration attempt was considered and set aside; didn’t produce a real hook and didn’t suit Eliza’s characterization.
- Stanimir’s raw-module “Vistani can leave Barovia” parable is reassigned to Eliza. Session 9 update: told in play as the Vistani founding parable (the wounded “prince”); judged true by most listeners.
- Stanimir, freed up, tells the Lugdana story instead — framed as a tale about “his best friend,” gesturing toward Yester Hill without a concrete reason to go there yet. Session 9 update: told in play; judged a half-truth (“Lugdana surely existed… we do not know where she is”).
- Ireena keeps her own story — the vehicle for her wolf-chase “nightmare”/blessing memory (see Ireena’s anti-curse blessing (major plot device)). Session 9 update: not used this session — still pending for a future session.
- Stanimir is placed last as a pacing safety valve — can skip his turn if the table’s energy flags.
- Presentation plan: all four stories trimmed shorter; players choose to roleplay or have the GMs summarize (Inspiration reward for participating). Doubles as an in-character “quest recap” via Ireena marking up the map, with an out-of-character bullet-list fallback. Drafted line for Ireena on Gertruda: wouldn’t call it a “quest,” takes Mad Mary’s account with a grain of salt, but is genuinely worried and hopes Gertruda might be among the Vallaki refugees.
The Pie Mill (reworked Old Durst Mill)
The old Durst family mill, now run by Morgantha and her daughters/sisters as a “confectionery” selling cheap, popular pies (~1 gp/box of six, first-time half-price discount). Deliberately not introduced as “the creepy old mill” — Eliza recommends it warmly as a wholesome local landmark; Stanimir is more cautious/wary, a deliberate contrast.
Content note, handle with care: the mill’s “bloodberry pies” were workshopped with a secret ingredient of menstrual blood harvested from the adolescent girls working there (kept complacent/drugged), played as grim dark-comedy about exploitative labor in a resource-scarce land — in the same body-horror/hag-lore register as the published Morgantha dream-pastry hook, not romantic or sexual content. This needs a deliberate, separate decision from you about how much of it, if any, actually surfaces at the table versus staying GM-only flavor.
The Tser Falls bridge: Strahd near-miss and the Roc
- Logistics behind the already-logged Session 8 near-miss: Strahd was nearby (plausibly getting his own fortune read by Madam Eva) and is heading back to Castle Ravenloft by carriage as the party arrives via a different route — hence the Strix delegation inviting the party to dinner rather than Strahd appearing in person. Rahadin delivering the invitation personally was explicitly rejected as reading like a threatening summons rather than a genuine invitation.
- New monster idea, inspired by (not adopted from) a third-party homebrew “Rock of Mount Gakis” writeup: a single powerful bird-monster for this region (explicitly not two). Leaning toward it being Madam Eva’s Roc, corrupted/subjugated by Strahd (see the Strahd and Madam Eva entries) rather than an unrelated Strahd-owned creature — keeping the bird motif tied to the Autumn Fane. If a second Roc/nest exists, a location was floated at “Mount Berrypuck,” doubling as a flesh-map cache. Smaller falconry-themed alternatives (giant bat, “Nightwing” bat, unspecified falcon) were considered as less-lethal substitutes if a full Roc is too strong for the party’s level — undecided. Tone goal: a genuine, non-Strahd-specific danger the party can hide from or barely survive, not necessarily win outright. A gentler alternative (Strahd glimpsed feeding his pet Roc near the bridge, non-combat) was also floated and left open. 2026-09-15 update: the Roc of Mount Gakis is now named as the Autumn Fane’s primordial beast (The Primordial Beasts).
- Unresolved philosophical debate: Chris prefers hand-placed, semi-scripted location encounters; Michelle prefers true random encounters for a more organic feel. Used the scripted approach for this specific bridge scene; the general default wasn’t resolved.
