Session 3.5b - The Shadow Theatre
Players: Cassandra
Channel: #3-5b-the-shadow-theatre
Summary:
- Cassandra falls asleep at the Blood of the Vine tavern, wine in hand, and enters a dream sequence set in a grand shadow puppet theatre
- She finds herself seated in a private balcony beside Ismerk — a slightly off version of Ismark — who carries a raven on his shoulder that Cassandra correctly identifies as not belonging to him
- Cassandra rolls low on Wisdom and clocks the raven as wrong but cannot fully place why; on a later Perception 20 she notices the raven’s eyes move independently, tracking her
- Ismerk proposes a three-card Tarokka reading framed as being for him; Cassandra correctly deduces early that the reading is for her benefit, not his
-
Each card drawn triggers a shadow puppet play on the stage below depicting the history of the Rozana:
- Card 1 — The Missionary: The Weaver is shown blessing her people in still water until her power fails; she looks directly at Cassandra’s balcony before her spirals fray but hold
- Card 2 — The Berserker: The Huntress is shown on Yester Hill, betrayed by a kneeling follower who leads a purple-shadowed figure to her shrine; she is defeated, the Gulthias Tree grows from where she falls, the betrayer transforms into a wolf
- Card 3 — The Broken One: The Seeker is shown moving urgently between three sickly fanes before choosing retreat over confrontation with the purple shadow; she transfers her divine essence as a single feather into a smaller mortal woman, who then sits at a table and picks up a deck of cards that orbit her — exactly as Cassandra’s do
- Ismerk delivers the line “She chose to become small so the truth could survive” and asks Cassandra directly “Who is this future for?” — Cassandra deflects with mania and self-deprecation
- Ismerk’s voice continues though his lips stop moving; the room grows dramatically colder; Cassandra correctly deduces the entity is not Strahd-aligned due to the cold being attributed to “another’s aspect”
- An uninvited fourth card — The Horseman — appears on the table, drawn by no one
- The entity speaking through Ismerk reacts with alarm: “You! You were not invited!”
- On an Arcana 16, Cassandra briefly sees Ismerk’s face replaced by a wooden mannequin’s and perceives a magical aura the size of a man surrounding the raven
- The shadow play resumes uninvited: the three sisters huddle at a fire while a fourth figure stands apart, reaching toward a hand made not of shadow but of pure darkness; the fourth sister walks into it and her form becomes night
- Cassandra wakes gasping
Key revelations & consequences:
- Cassandra has now witnessed the complete myth of the Rozana — the Weaver, the Huntress, the Seeker, and the existence of a fourth sister who fell
- The Seeker’s avatar (Madam Eva) is now confirmed through imagery — the feather transfer and the orbiting cards are a direct mirror of Cassandra herself; the Seeker chose Cassandra deliberately
- The fourth card and the Devourer’s appearance were uninvited and alarmed the Ismerk-entity, suggesting the Devourer’s reach exceeds what even the dream’s architect intended
Key NPCs established:
- Ismerk — Dream avatar; wooden mannequin beneath the human face; the raven carries a magical aura the size of a man. Play on Ismark.
