The Woodcutter’s Bride — Ludmilla Vilisevic (Session 9)
Source characterization: New, introduced in Session 9 gameplay — not previously in this bible.
Role: A vampire of confirmed noble lineage, encountered on the road between the Tser Falls area and Vallaki, directing a large-scale forced-labor operation of undead cutting and hauling timber. Traveling with at least one wizard ally/subordinate.
Identity (canonical, confirmed 2026-09-24): this is Ludmilla Vilisevic, Strahd’s eldest bride (see the Brides entry above). (Previously filed as a GM working title only.) The name was never spoken to the party in dialogue — Ireena did not introduce her, and she never gave her name before combat broke out — so in-fiction the party still doesn’t know who she was.
Key characterization principles (from play, Session 9):
- Noble-lineage vampire; wealthy dress and bearing (parasol, lace, fine robes), openly directing a line of undead laborers rather than hiding her nature.
- Commands a large, coordinated undead workforce — far larger than the immediate encounter suggested. When she was defeated, every undead she was animating collapsed simultaneously across a wide area, “up to and beyond the castle,” including separate groups chopping wood elsewhere in the forest — implying she was centrally coordinating a significant, castle-scale construction/logistics operation for Strahd, not just the local work party the group first saw.
- Has vampire mist-form and an airborne grapple; also has a unique choking/suffocation mist attack (functions like an asphyxiation effect — deafens, silences, and slowly suffocates a target) not previously logged for any vampire NPC in this campaign.
- Her apparent death was unusual for a vampire in this campaign: rather than a normal dust-and-stake ending, she screamed, the sky visibly “split open,” and she was described as being deleted from existence outright — “nothing remains.” Canonical explanation (2026-09-24): she did not die. At 0 HP an emergency dimensional portal returned her to Castle Ravenloft; the split sky was the portal opening. The simultaneous collapse of her undead is consistent with her control being severed as she was pulled away (inference, not separately confirmed).
- Fate of her wizard companion is unresolved — see Session 9 open threads.
[IDEA — NONCANONICAL] 2026-09-19 proposed explanation: her lumber operation (now canonically Ludmilla’s) fed two undead supply lines — one to Castle Ravenloft (for the Roc) and one to the upstream poison works on the Luna River (Strahd’s Machination: Poisoning the Winter Worm).
Current narrative status (canonical): Survived Session 9 — escaped to Castle Ravenloft via emergency portal at 0 HP; the party believes they destroyed her. Left behind a large stockpile of cut lumber. Resolved between sessions (per Session 10 recap): the party sent the lumber to the village of Barovia to build barricades against the undead. Session 10 recap note: Michelle stated that Reyna distinctly knows Ludmilla is not dead — how Reyna learned this isn’t in the session log yet (likely online RP between sessions); add it if there’s a record.
