Session 0.5d - Pursuit of Knowledge
Players: Gaille Channel: #0-5d-pursuit-of-knowledge
Summary:
- Gaille arrives at the small town of Menis, having heard that a Resinite once passed through. Her goal: find information about the Resin Shrine and its secrets of eternal life
- Two friendly guards direct her to the town library and its librarian, Miri
- Miri greets her with an unsettling foreknowledge — “A little dove told me a girl fond of secrets may be coming my way” — and speaks entirely in rhyme. This appears to be a genuine characterization trait, not an affectation
-
Gaille asks about the Resinites and the Resin Shrine. Miri responds by performing a doroq — a half-chant, half-song epic — which reveals the following:
- The Resin Shrine is not merely a repository of knowledge; it is a prison built to contain an ancient, unkillable darkness
- The entity drew wandering souls to it with promises of eternal, deathless things
- The Resinites could not destroy it, so they caged it in amber and remained to watch over it — singing what Miri calls “the watching hymn”
- Gaille correctly identifies that the amber charm Miri shows her is a fragment of the prison structure. Detect Magic confirms abjuration magic emanating from it
- As Gaille holds the charm and casts Detect Magic, she hears childlike laughter — Miri goes unnervingly still, and the laughter continues. When Gaille asks if something wants to speak with her, the scene ends on an open, ominous beat
- Miri places the resin charm in Gaille’s hand before the scene closes — Gaille now possesses it
Key revelations & consequences:
- The Resin Shrine is NOT confirmed as the Amber Temple — Gaille now has foundational lore about what it is and why it exists, acquired before entering Barovia
- The amber charm is a shard of the prison framework — this is the moment of acquisition for the Amber Shard item
- Khirad’s presence is already detectable through the charm before Gaille has accepted any of its gifts — the childlike laughter is the vestige’s first contact
- Miri’s foreknowledge (“a little dove told me”) is unexplained — she may have a connection to the ravens of Barovia or to the Seeker’s network
Key NPCs established:
- Miri — Elderly librarian of Menis; speaks entirely in rhyme; possesses foreknowledge of Gaille’s arrival; goes unnervingly still when Khirad’s laughter manifests. Her true nature and affiliations are unresolved
Open threads:
- What hidden information did Gaille miss in the doroq due to the failed rolls?
- What is Miri’s connection to the ravens — or to the Seeker?
- The childlike laughter at the session’s end: is Khirad already attempting to initiate contact, or simply amused by being detected?
- Gaille now carries the Amber Shard — when does Stage One of Khirad’s corruption begin?
