Esmeralda D’Avenir (Von Richten’s former apprentice)
Source characterization: Homebrew, built as a foil/mirror to Von Richten’s arc
Role: A Vistani girl Von Richten once mentored; now believes it’s her duty to save him from what he’s become
Key characterization principles:
- Background: from the De Avenir/Deafnier family, whose parents were killed by werewolves. Von Richten found and raised her as a de facto apprentice — her family line was not the one that sold Erasmus (they’d already left Barovia by then), so he could accept her without immediate hypocrisy.
- Age note: roughly 14 around the time of the Erasmus incident — impressionable, without real agency in events.
- Von Richten never fully treats her as his own child, reluctant to open his heart to her — she eventually understands this stems from her Vistani bloodline, the same bloodline responsible for his son’s death.
- The break: she eventually goes off on her own for a period. During that time, Von Richten hunts down and slaughters the Radonovich family (Arturi’s family) after learning of their role in selling Erasmus. Esmeralda disbelieves the reports until she meets Arturi himself, a survivor, and confirms it firsthand.
- Core motivation going forward: still loves Von Richten as a father figure, doesn’t badmouth him, but can no longer call his vengeance heroic. Believes it’s her duty — out of love, not just obligation — to save him from what he’s become, rather than simply hunt him as a monster. (An earlier, harsher framing — “it would be a mercy to end his life” — was floated and softened toward this more redemptive angle, consistent with your stated preference for hope/redemption over pure tragedy.)
- Has a mechanical arm, likely from an early act of overconfidence (possibly soloing a werewolf den to prove herself to Von Richten).
- Per RAW;, can appear as a random encounter inside Castle Ravenloft, sneaking around looking for ways to kill Strahd herself.
- Self-assessment: jaded and wise beyond her years in some respects, but still prone to overestimating her own capability.
