Character Items

Each character carries a unique item that reflects their identity and grows with them over the course of the campaign. These entries capture narrative significance and key story stakes — full mechanical rules live in Foundry.

Theren — Hollow Dragon’s Tooth

A soul bottle that can carry Reysatra’s soul out of Barovia. Provides Theren the ability to cast a reserve of Lay on Hands but the connection runs deeper than mechanics: Reysatra knows each time that power is drawn upon. The item functions only as long as her soul remains alive.

Key story stakes: Can Theren save his sister?

Gaille – Amber Shard

A fragment of a larger amber framework — once part of the prison architecture of the Amber Temple. Amber is a magical insulator, resistant to all forms of energy, which means the entity sealed within leaks through only very slowly. That entity is Khirad, the Star of Secrets: an Elder Evil, a Far Realm demigod, naturally curious, and deeply amused by the living. The shard has already begun its work on Gaille — the vestige’s influence grows in stages, each acceptance of its gifts pulling her closer to transformation and toward the Amber Temple, where Khirad’s full power (and full corruption) awaits. The end state of total acceptance: a perpetual frozen smile, a voice reduced to a whisper, and advantage on Intelligence checks paid for in humanity.

Khirad manifests itself as ‘Void Child’ to Gaille. Void child can only speak in gifs and songs that they imprint onto Gaille’s mind.

Key story stakes: Each time Gaille accepts Khirad’s aid, the corruption deepens and becomes harder to reverse. Khirad wants a willing host to return to the mortal plain — Gaille is the candidate. The Temple is the endgame

[IDEA — NONCANONICAL] See the REVISION note under Void Child’s NPC entry — Khirad/Void Child’s identity as an Elder Evil vs. a corrupted Winter Fane remnant is unresolved.

Cassandra – Dark One’s Tarokka Deck

A Tarokka deck with origins darker than the standard Vistani tools of divination. Where an ordinary deck reads fortune, this one may read something more binding — or be read by something looking back. For Cassandra, who already makes up fortunes for fun while genuine prophetic visions crack through her without warning, the deck introduces a question: when she uses it, is she the reader or the instrument?

Key story stakes: Cassandra’s connection to Madam Eva (an avatar of the Seeker goddess) gives the deck cosmological weight. The Seeker’s domain is knowledge and foresight — Cassandra may be more entangled in the Fanes than she knows.

Lyasra — Deva’s Feather

A feather from a celestial being — given to Lyasra as part of her quest to find an angel at St. Markovia’s Abbey.

Key story stakes: What is the feather’s relationship to whatever remains at the Abbey? The angel is fallen, so can Lyasra find her own faith strong enough to confront a fallen angel?

Dismas — Tin Pendant

IMPORTANT: RETIRED - Now an NPC

A tin locket that records the faces of sentient beings Dismas has killed in Barovia — including Rahadin. It does not let him forget. For a man who came to Barovia running from what he’d done, the pendant is an externalized conscience: every face he adds is a reckoning deferred. What it does with those faces — whether it is merely a record or something more — remains to be seen.

Key story stakes: Rahadin’s face appearing in the locket is a significant detail — unknown to Dismas, Rahadin called the hit on Erasmus. The locket may eventually force a confrontation with that connection.

Jacob — Werewolf Fang Bracelet

A bracelet of wolf fangs — thematically bound to Jacob’s lycanthropy and his identity as something caught between man and beast. The specific properties of the bracelet should be developed in play, but its presence signals that Jacob’s monstrous nature is not something to be hidden or cured — it is something to be worn.

Key story stakes: Jacob’s connection to Gertruda is the emotional core of his arc. The bracelet may speak to the tension between the life he wants to return to and what Barovia has made him.

World & Quest Items (New — from GM worldbuilding sessions) [IDEA — NONCANONICAL unless noted]

Ring of Mind Shielding (Von Richten)

Status: idea, not yet introduced in play. Grants immunity to magic that allows creatures to read his thoughts, determine whether he’s lying, know his alignment, or know his creature type. Narratively: when someone attempts to read his mind, they find it “empty.” Ties directly into his cold, controlled characterization.

Von Richten’s Undead-Warded Bedroll (unnamed)

Status: idea, needs full homebrew stat-out — open thread. A magic bedroll/sleeping bag, likely made from some undead-adjacent material, that causes anyone using it to register as undead/aberration to detection magic — explaining how Von Richten sleeps safely despite constantly attracting undead. Needs an in-fiction concealment method (a bag of holding or similar) so players don’t immediately notice a “corpse-smelling sleeping bag” and get suspicious.

The Sun Sword

Status: partially established (module baseline item); the following backstory is idea-stage. Per this campaign’s reworked history, the Sun Sword is kept inside the Amber Temple itself, guarded by Argonvost. Saint Markovia had to prove herself worthy before Argonvost armed her with it, and she used it to kill Strahd a second time. Per the Session 8 Tarokka reading, the Eight of Glyphs card (“a weapon of vengeance, a sword of sunlight… in an amber prison where the devil fears to tread”) points the party toward it, and toward the Amber Temple generally. Session 9 update: Ireena’s in-fiction knowledge narrowed the physical route to Argonvost’s Holt to an offshoot of the Luna River.

The Tome of Strahd

Status: idea-stage, a major new questline. An artifact resembling Strahd’s own diary/journal, giving deep, humanizing backstory and potentially his own research notes on communing with/summoning the Dark Powers (“Mother Night” in-world — see Tome of Strahd). Hidden inside the Volokovich mansion’s enchanted Spirit Mirror, a gift from Saint Andrew to the family, styled as a Sorcerer’s-Stone/Mirror-of-Erised analog. Full questline details, including multiple parallel NPC leads, are in Tome of Strahd.

The Heart of Darkness

Status: idea-stage. The Winter Fane’s remaining physical essence, tentatively located at the bottom of Lake Zarovich (with a mountain-location alternative also considered). Strahd cannot personally retrieve it due to his running-water weakness — this is being used as a legitimate fetch-quest hook, potentially offering the party passage out of Barovia in exchange for retrieval. See Strahd’s motivations for full details, including the significant player-exit mechanic tied to this item. 2026-09-19 ideation update: now tied to the Winter Worm, the Winter Fane’s primordial beast sleeping at the lake bottom. Strahd is slowly poisoning the worm to get the Heart, and plans to send Rahadin (and possibly the party) down to kill it. Whether the Heart is inside the worm or guarded by it, and whether it’s one stone or several, is undecided. See The Winter Worm & the Heart of Darkness and Strahd’s Machination: Poisoning the Winter Worm.

The Holy Symbol / Amulet of Ravenkind

Status: partially established (module baseline item); location narrowed in play. Per this campaign’s card-reading tracker, tied to the “Five of Swords, the Myrmidon” Tarokka card — located at a den of wolves overlooking a mountain lake. Previously left ambiguous between two candidates (Lake Luna or Lake Baratok); Session 9 update: in-fiction discussion with Ireena narrowed this to Luna Lake specifically (the only one of the two with hills, matching the card’s “den of wolves in the hills”). Possibly given by Madam Eva to Lugdana’s expedition historically, as a stopgap when she knew they couldn’t kill Strahd outright — that part remains idea-stage.

Tatyana’s Bracelet

Status: CANONICAL item (revealed in Session 5.5 — see Session Log below); the deeper lineage lore attached to it is idea-stage. A silver bracelet with gemstones, found in Ireena’s lockbox. New idea layered on: this item ties into the Tatiana reincarnation lineage (see Ireena/Tatiana entry, Tatiana / Ireena reincarnation lineage) — its origin and who placed it with her as a child is deliberately left unresolved, per your stated preference for ambiguity over exposition.

Other Items

Belinda

Spelling (GM-confirmed 2026-10-10): the session logs called this doll “Blinda”; standardized to Belinda throughout on 2026-10-10.

Doll that houses the soul of Mad Mary’s miscarried first daughter. Desires a host to become alive. Loves her sister, Gertruda and always wants to keep her little sister safe. Has a empathic connection to those that touch it.

Session 11 (canonical): carried by Gaille. When she drew it out inside Vallaki to comfort the child Jen, she felt a longing, as if they were in the right place — feelings neither hers nor the Void Child’s. She didn’t hand it over.
