Session 5.5 — After the First Night…
Players: Dismas, Cassandra, Lyasra (Ireena present as NPC/travel companion) Channel: (fill in — appears to be the same channel/thread as Session 5’s aftermath)
Context: Post-siege, the party has beds for the night and a plan to depart for Vallaki come morning. Ismark has retired. Ireena — now wearing a scarf to conceal Strahd’s bite — pulls out the last of the winery’s stock.
Summary:
- Party plays 2 lies and a truth
- Unbeknownst to the others, Dismas spikes the drinks with truth serum while setting up the glasses and seating. Ireena fails her saving throw and is dosed without realizing it.
- Cassandra is immediately and enthusiastically in. Lyasra is visibly reluctant — slow to join, muttering “Only the poor can afford to speak the truth” — but settles in next to Cassandra regardless. A Perception 16 catches something telling in how she eyes the glasses: this is not her first acquaintance with drink, and likely a heavy one.
- Ireena, asked to go first, gets cold feet on her own reveal and asks to think on it, passing the opening slot to Dismas.
- Dismas’s statements (delivered as a grim joke framing three claims):
- A gallows-humor riddle about hungry bandits and cannibalism
- That he’s never eaten anyone, though he’s killed plenty — “only ever killed one woman”
- Uncertainty about whether the party is equipped to kill Strahd, framed as doubt about their odds against a foe hundreds of heroes have failed against nightly
- The group has not yet resolved which statement is the lie/truth — Cassandra confirms the “guess the one true statement” framing, and the scene is still sorting out which comments map to which claim when the log cuts off.
- Dismas sets the stakes: the loser(s) of each round drink.
Key revelations & consequences:
- Dismas has drugged the group with truth serum, and Ireena — having failed her save — is already compromised without her knowledge. Whatever she reveals in her deferred round can no longer be assumed to be a matter of her own choice or composure; this recontextualizes both her earlier hesitation and whatever she eventually says as potentially unfiltered rather than performed.
- This also casts a new light on Dismas’s own “voluntary” disclosure — he may be the one person at the table aware the game is rigged, which makes his choice to still play along (and to frame his statements as a joke) worth tracking closely.
- Ireena’s bite is now physically concealed with a scarf — she is actively managing the secret rather than having disclosed it to the party. With the serum in play, that management may not hold.
- Lyasra’s drinking history is flagged nonverbally (Perception 16) — a detail worth folding into her Red Fang-era characterization without being stated outright to the table. Notably, Lyasra has not yet been confirmed to have had a drink — worth tracking whether she’s dosed as well.
- Dismas’s own three statements are a rare piece of voluntary self-disclosure from a cynical, guarded character — worth tracking which one the table lands on as truth, since it will retroactively color his backstory (the “only ever killed one woman” line in particular brushes directly against his Session 0.5b origin with the wounded woman in the wagon).
- Revealed Ireena’s Lockbox which contains critical information for the players, Tatyana’s Bracelet.
Open threads:
- Which of Dismas’s three statements is the truth, and what the party concludes from it (unresolved as of the transcript’s end).
- Whether/when the party discovers the drinks were spiked — and how Dismas explains himself if confronted.
- Ireena’s own round — she deferred hers; now compromised by the serum, her statements and what they reveal (possibly touching on the bite, Strahd, or her own history) carry higher stakes than she realizes.
- Whether Lyasra’s visible history with drink becomes a spoken thread or stays an unspoken detail.
