Baba Lysaga

Source characterization: Homebrew reworking of the published-module NPC, tied into the Fanes mythology

Role: Former priestess of the Spring Fane; Strahd’s self-styled “true mother”; exiled to Berez

Key characterization principles:

  • A former priestess (not necessarily high priestess) of the Spring Fane, motivated by love for Strahd and a desire to absorb the Spring Fane’s memory-collecting power to become, in her own mind, Strahd’s “true mother.”
  • Captured the Spring Fane in amber — this is floated (not confirmed) as the origin/etymology of “Amber Temple,” though this needs reconciling with the Temple’s established deeper history as an ancient nexus predating her.
  • Exiled by Strahd (via Rahadin) to the ruins of Berez — not yet ruins at the time of her exile — after he grew unable to tolerate her instability.
  • Later performs a ritual sacrifice using Berez itself as fuel to resurrect Strahd after his second (Markovia-era) death, drawing on/further depleting the Spring Fane’s power she already holds captive — offered as the explanation for both her present comparative weakness and Berez’s eventual ruin.
  • Occupies a dual faction position: tied to Strahd directly, with acknowledged (unresolved) connections to the Dark Powers as well.
  • [IDEA — NONCANONICAL] 2026-09-19: helps Ludmilla craft the poison slowly killing the Winter Worm (Strahd’s Machination: Poisoning the Winter Worm). Her creeping hut is floated as an automaton imitation of the Spring Fane’s primordial spider (The Primordial Beasts). Unresolved: whether she has covens/pupils/agents (Chris’s view) or works alone (Michelle’s prior assumption). Folk tales may cast her as a healer whose cures come at a great price (Vallaki’s Factions (current working model)).

Current narrative status: Not yet encountered in play; tied to the ruins of Berez, an unvisited location.
