Dismas

  • Player: Chris Lee

  • Aesthetic archetype: Highwayman (Darkest Dungeon)

  • Race/Class: Male Human Rogue

  • Personality notes: Cynical survivor energy; likely distrustful of institutions and idealism; pragmatic under pressure

  • Background provided by player: My PC has recently gone through an extremely traumatic change of alignment. Here’s an origin teaser if it helps RP. ```Barovia is a land of mists that is nowhere. Tall tales of harrowing, blood curdling, quiet horror permeate the lips of those who tell it. Stories of entire bands of heroes being absconded by the mists to serve the Eldritch machinations of some malevolent gods. But, in a world where most never walk more than a half turn from their home, is it not simply easier that Barovia has simply always been a country a journey’s away?

Dismas came to banditry in the usual way, he was hungry. Dying is a soldier’s talent which he learned he wished to avoid despite his obvious gift for violence. Chandlery also paid terribly.

Bandits who make it out of their teenage years are a paranoid, untrusting, and unfeeling lot. He had been seeing and hearing a lot of things recently that didn’t make sense, and that he couldn’t explain. But despite that niggling feeling that something was wrong with the world, the recent disgusting monsters and despicable spellweavers he encountered died when they got shot. So how much could the world really have changed?

Scattershot into the side of a carriage. Volleys of arrows and gunfire broke way to an uncomfortable silence. Medium height, dark eyes and hair, a ragged coat, a blood red mask, smelling of oil, bat shit, and grave salt. With a bath he could’ve been anyone if he didn’t have the unmistakable feeling of a murderer. The bandit dropped his weapons, tore off his mask, and fell to his knees. He simply stared into the carriage as the door slowly lurched open. The ringing in his ears from battle drowning out the uncomfortable silence of being the only survivor of a slaughter.

“A reflex - I didn’t mean to…”

The words slipped out of the bandit’s mouth, sliding through the thick air into nothing. Dismas had heard that clerics and crusaders were called by their gods. He would never hear their voice, but he knew he could no longer live as he once had. He left most of his goods and weapons behind, taking only one thing from the carriage as he fled the scene. Running toward the mists.
