Ireena Kolyana

Source characterization: RAW (Ireena Kolyana), heavily reworked. Introduced in play in Session 5 (“Meeting Ireena”). Entry created 2026-10-10 by gathering what the bible already said about her across the session log, NPC entries, lore and prep notes. No new material was added. Fields of the full NPC template (Resonance, Emotions, Morale, Voice) haven’t been worked out yet and are left for the GMs.

Spelling: Ireena Kolyana (GM-confirmed 2026-10-10). Earlier entries and transcripts often spell it “Irena”; that spelling is kept here only as an alias.

Role: Adopted daughter of Burgomaster Kolyan Indirovich of Barovia and sister to Ismark. Strahd’s present-day obsession and Tatiana’s most recent reincarnation. Travels with the party as an NPC companion, bound for Vallaki.

Key characterization principles:

  • Respected, not merely protected: Ismark admits she can best him with a rapier (Session 2.5a).
  • Manages her own secrets rather than handing them over. She hid Strahd’s bite under a scarf, and asked to go later rather than take her turn in the Session 5.5 truth game.
  • A useful guide for the party: she knows the land and its people, marks quest locations on their map, interprets their Tarokka readings with them (Session 9), and recognized Stella Watcher from the diary (Session 10).
  • “She’s a girl’s girl.” She stayed at Gaille’s side through Kasimir’s attention (Session 10).
  • Should be specifically infuriated by the Volokoviches refusing Barovian refugees entry to Vallaki (lore/vallaki-houses, ideation).

Canonical facts (established in play or GM-confirmed):

  • Bitten by Strahd. Kolyan died, and Ismark asked the party to escort her to Vallaki (Session 5). The superstition behind the mob’s chant: “a girl of red brings monsters and dread” (Session 2.5a).
  • Tatyana’s Bracelet: a silver bracelet with gemstones found in her lockbox (Session 5.5). See Key Items.
  • Disguised: Dismas dyed her red hair black with a blond streak (Session 7). Vallaki “knows” Kolyan’s daughter has bright red hair.
  • Dosed with truth serum by Dismas in Session 5.5 without her knowledge. Her own turn in the truth game is still to come.
  • Izek Strazani is her blood brother (canonical, 2026-09-24). Not revealed at the table, and neither of them knows. See Izek.

[IDEA — NONCANONICAL] GM ideation attached to her:

  • Reincarnation lineage: Tatiana → Saint Markovia → Ireena (Tatiana / Ireena reincarnation lineage, lore/cosmology). Kolyan suspected the cycle and searched for her, then adopted her. Strahd may believe she is a nexus point like the Fanes, not simply a romantic fixation.
  • Anti-curse blessing (Ireena’s anti-curse blessing (major plot device), lore/strahd-motivations): she was blessed while alone in the woods before Kolyan found her, most likely by the Summer Fane. This is why Strahd’s bite didn’t turn her. It shifts Strahd into a carrot-and-stick courtship, and makes Von Richten want to experiment on her once he learns of it.
  • The wolf-chase “nightmare”: a recurring dream of being chased by a large black wolf, which is really a suppressed memory of the blessing. Planned for her campfire story, which still hasn’t been told (Sessions 9 and 10).
  • How she and Izek were separated: Chris’s version has Kolyan find her in the Svalich Woods while Izek reached Vallaki as an orphan. Michelle raised timeline concerns, so this is unsettled.
  • Izek’s red-hair fixation: he won’t recognize her while her hair is dyed. That could change if the dye grows out or washes off.
  • Threats considered for the Vallaki arc: an assassination attempt by Anastrasya, and werewolves attacking her to win Strahd’s favor. Both were considered and dropped as the Session 11 night attack (prep). Volenta would regard her as her biggest threat if the brides learn of her (Strahd’s Brides).
  • At the Vallaki gate: if she announces herself as Ireena Kolyana, the guards laugh her off because of her dyed hair (Session 10 prep, archive). Michelle’s alternative: guards who recognize her say it’s “above our pay grade” and send her to the Burgomaster. Session 11 prep lists showing the letter of introduction and convincing the guards of her lineage as a core social route in.

Current narrative status (canonical): Travelling with the party. Session 11: chose to spend the night with the Barovian refugees as her duty to her people; Magda and Emeric recognized her despite her dyed hair. Agreed to go into Vallaki that night because “something is clearly wrong,” and is now inside the walls with the party, her hair still dyed black and the bite hidden. Her destination is Vallaki, and the party hopes to find priestly protection for her there (Session 9).
