NPC Dialogue & Scene — Screenplay Format

Write a scene for [SCENE/LOCATION] involving [NPC NAME(S)] in the following situation:

[DESCRIBE THE SCENE, WHAT PRECEDES IT, AND WHAT THE PLAYERS HAVE SAID OR DONE].

Format as a screenplay:

  • Scene heading (INT./EXT. — LOCATION — TIME), used at the start and at any hard location or time change
  • Action/stage direction in short, present-tense lines — sparse and functional, not descriptive prose
  • Character cues in ALL CAPS, followed by dialogue
  • Parentheticals for tone, physical business, or delivery, used sparingly — only where they change how a line should be read or performed
  • Conditional branches marked clearly, e.g. (IF the players ask about X:) or (Unless the players intervene:), so branching dialogue stays legible in a single document
  • CONT’D for a character continuing after a stage direction interrupts them mid-speech

Draw on each NPC’s established characterization: [PASTE KEY TRAITS FROM THEIR PROFILE ABOVE].

Voice reference: [e.g., Dragnacarta’s Gertruda / Mad Mary broken-grief register].

Keep exposition (backstory, motivations, secret agendas) out of the dialogue unless the character would plausibly say it aloud to the players at this point in the relationship — flag anything GM-only as a separate note beneath the scene, not spoken content.

Character Letter / Journal Entry

Write a [letter / journal entry] from [CHARACTER NAME] to [RECIPIENT / themselves].

Situation: [What has just happened that motivates this writing? What emotional state are they in?]

Voice: [Reference their profile above — key traits, speech patterns, internal register].

This should read as a real document this character would produce, not a plot summary.

Length: [SHORT — half a page / MEDIUM — one page / LONG — two pages equivalent].

Follow with design notes.

Encounter Atmosphere — Mid-Session

The players are in the middle of [ENCOUNTER / SCENE]. I need a 2–3 sentence atmospheric

injection to read aloud when [SPECIFIC TRIGGER — e.g., they enter the room, the NPC

reveals something, the mood shifts].

Gothic register. Concise. Punchy. No mechanical information — atmosphere only.
