Von Richten (Rudolph van Richten)

Status: [IDEA — NONCANONICAL major rework of a published-module character.] His Session 2 rescue of Gertruda is already canonical; everything below expands on his motivations and methods and has not been revealed to players.

Roleplaying Information

Resonance. A once-noble figure whose long grief and vengeance have curdled him into something darker — sympathetic in his backstory, unsettling in his present methods.

Emotions. Jaded, controlled, increasingly cold; capable of real tenderness (toward Gertruda, historically toward Esmeralda) that coexists uneasily with his cruelty toward the Vistani.

Motivations. Vengeance against the Vistani broadly (not just the family who sold his son Erasmus) — since Erasmus was sold to Strahd’s court and killed. Recently developed a new fixation: experimenting on Ireena the moment he learns she can resist vampirism (see The three-way power struggle: Dark Powers vs. Strahd vs. the Fanes), framed as another symptom of his darkening arc.

Character Information

Aliases: Rictavio; Alenik, a disguise Von Richten uses (GM-confirmed 2026-10-10; spelled “Alanik” in the Session 5 log until standardized to Alenik on 2026-10-10)

Persona. No longer just a grim vampire hunter — reconceived as someone who corrals/traps weaker undead (echoing The Walking Dead’s caged-walker encampments) and maintains multiple hidden undead depots across Barovia, tied directly into the existing “flesh map” cache system: some caches the party finds are his, not Strahd’s. Concealment method: pitfall-trap-style pits, which doubles as an explanation for some of Barovia’s missing villagers (fell in, turned, and either escaped or wandered home — feeding some of the undead that hit the Session 4 siege).

Morale. Cannot rest peacefully near the undead he attracts, so he’s drawn to consecrated/holy nexuses — part of why Vallaki (protected via consecration) appeals to him, and why he’s shown recent interest in St. Andrew’s Church there specifically.

Relationships. Does not yet know he is being drawn toward the Dark Powers’ attention — Michelle’s clarifying note: the Dark Powers don’t control him yet, they find him increasingly enticing as a potential asset given his own moral decay. He’s a third-party actor drawing unwanted attention, not yet compromised.

Confirmed items/details:

  • Ring of Mind Shielding (see Key Items) — immune to thought-reading, alignment-detection, and creature-type detection; anyone attempting to read his mind finds it “empty.”
  • An unnamed homebrew magic bedroll/sleeping bag (see Key Items) that causes anyone inside it to register as undead/aberration to detection magic — still needs full mechanical stat-out and an in-fiction concealment method (a bag of holding or similar), since a “corpse-smelling sleeping bag” would otherwise draw immediate suspicion.
  • Timeline: in Barovia roughly 15–20 years (revised down from an initial 25–30 estimate to keep his age plausible as a young doctor when his son was taken). Was once a doctor who spent his time and money healing others — a kindness now curdled into vengeance.
  • Hobbies: wine connoisseurship offers a fetch-quest hook — he could offer passage out of Barovia in exchange for bottles from the Wizard of Wines vineyard, run by the Martikov family. (Cross-reference: this idea actually belongs to Strahd’s characterization, not Von Richten’s — see Full profile notes cross-reference. Included here as a reminder these two NPCs’ arcs may intersect at the Martikov vineyard.)
  • First appearance confirmed: he will not appear human-looking to the party on first encounter — reads as a vampire through and through.
  • [IDEA — NONCANONICAL] 2026-09-27 / 10-08 ideation (Session 11 prep): Zombie swarm on the Vistani. He’s been collecting zombies in his pits to strike at Strahd and anything he sees as Strahd-aligned — chiefly the Vistani. Unless he’s dissuaded, he brings a zombie horde against the Vistani camp outside Vallaki during the three-day window (Major events in the three-day window). His tiger was mentioned as an alternative, but the zombies tie better into what’s already set up.
  • Discarded thread: an earlier idea that the child’s body recovered in Session 0.5b/Session 1 (Erasmus) was a vampire spawn was walked back — the internal logic didn’t hold (a vampire spawn wouldn’t have a heartbeat, and Dismas’s exam found one). Benched rather than force-retconned; pieces of it could be salvaged later if useful.
