Strahd’s Brides — Ludmilla Vilisevic, Anastrasya Karelova, Volenta Popofsky (GM ideation; Ludmilla partly canonical via Session 9)
[IDEA — NONCANONICAL] Source: the fan-made guide “The Brides, Escher, and Rahadin” (r/CurseofStrahd community homebrew; the guide’s own author notes it is “next to none… actual canon lore” and that in RAW Curse of Strahd the brides have no fleshed-out characterization and are simply locked in the crypts). Used here purely as inspiration and adapted/trimmed for this campaign. Anastrasya and Volenta have not been introduced to the party; Ludmilla has (Session 9, unnamed — see below).
Naming RESOLVED (canonical, confirmed 2026-09-24): the vampire the party fought in Session 9 — filed below as “The Woodcutter’s Bride” — was Ludmilla Vilisevic. She was not destroyed: on dropping to 0 HP, an emergency dimensional portal pulled her back to Castle Ravenloft. The “sky splitting open” / “nothing remains” the party saw was that portal. (What changed: the earlier open flag asked whether the two Ludmillas were the same person or separate; they are the same. Her name has still not been spoken to the party, and the party believes they killed her.) Her fan-guide profile below remains ideation, except where it overlaps with what happened in play.
2026-09-19 ideation [IDEA — NONCANONICAL]: Ludmilla is central to Strahd’s plan — she has run the long-term poisoning of the Winter Worm since Lugdana’s era with Baba Lysaga’s help, and she is part of his inner trio with Rahadin. Her Session 9 lumber operation now reads as part of that work (Strahd’s Machination: Poisoning the Winter Worm). “Anastrasia” in transcripts = Anastrasya Karelova, who pursues the Saint Andral’s bones heist on her own initiative and doesn’t know the grand plan. Volenta Popofsky (transcribed “Violetta”; confirmed to be the same character) is “the berserker,” placement TBD. Escher attaches himself to Volenta, hoping to manipulate her. See Strahd’s Offer to the Party, the Bones of Saint Andral & the Brides.
Ludmilla Vilisevic
Source characterization: Homebrew, adapted from the fan guide above.
Role: Eldest and most senior of Strahd’s three brides — 330 years old, 302 of them as one of Strahd’s consorts. An Aristocrat, Puppeteer, Diplomat, and Sorcerer; functions as de facto head of Strahd’s harem, though the other brides respect rather than obey her.
Key characterization principles:
- Cold, analytical, and scientific rather than passionate. Genuinely absorbed only by arcane study; performs interest in court gossip and beauty only because it’s expected of her.
- Strahd has given her partial Amber Temple knowledge but forbidden her from investigating it further herself — she still quietly wants to.
- Goals: keep Strahd’s favor permanently (her deepest fear is being set aside and eventually locked away in the crypts once she’s no longer useful); track down Barovia’s scattered Fey/Amber gems before Strahd learns she’s fallen behind; stay the most useful/knowledgeable consort to keep the others from undercutting her; and, longer-term, cultivate a suitable “next bride” so she can eventually step back from active duty without being discarded.
- Publicly poses in Vallaki as a noblewoman under a cover identity, recruiting adventuring parties toward goals that serve her (investigating werewolves, exposing a spy Burgomaster, dealing with Izek’s cruelty) without revealing that she — or any of the brides — are vampires. Keeps her own and the other brides’ identities hidden from any party she’s using, up until Strahd’s court formally “unveils” them.
- Relationships: genuinely values Rahadin as her closest confidant in the court (unlike her performative regard for almost everyone else) and would hunt down anyone responsible if he were harmed; personally recruited and now manages Anastrasya, treating her as a useful but replaceable underling; sees Volenta as a dangerously immature child she keeps on a short leash; has open contempt for Escher, Strahd’s newest and least-tested consort.
Appearance in play (canonical, Session 9): a wealthy, dark-skinned noblewoman with parasol, lace, and fine robes. She directed a castle-scale undead lumber operation with at least one wizard ally, fought airborne over the Tser Falls canyon, and used a choking/suffocation mist attack. See the Woodcutter’s Bride entry below for full play details.
Current narrative status (canonical): Encountered in Session 9, unnamed to the party. Reduced to 0 HP and escaped via an emergency dimensional portal to Castle Ravenloft — alive. The party believes they destroyed her. How badly she was hurt, and whether she knows who the party are and has reported them to Strahd, is open (Open questions).
Anastrasya Karelova
Source characterization: Homebrew, adapted from the fan guide above.
Role: Strahd’s second-eldest bride — 219 years old, 194 as a vampire. A Noble, Artist, Hostess, and Reckless.
Key characterization principles:
- Former Vallakian noblewoman of exceptional, self-regarding beauty; ruthless toward anyone she considered beneath her station even before being turned.
- Backstory hook: Ludmilla personally recruited her — under the guise of a tour of Castle Ravenloft meant to terrify her into staying loyal to Strahd’s court — but Anastrasya was enthralled by the display of power instead of frightened. Strahd turned her once his interest in Ludmilla began to wane.
- Bloodthirsty and showy: hosts frequent, lavish parties in Strahd’s honor and hunts more often and more loudly than the other brides.
- Resents Ludmilla as her only real competition for Strahd’s attention, but isn’t clever enough to act on it effectively; regards Volenta’s presence as a passing annoyance rather than a lasting threat.
- Goals: keep Strahd’s favor forever; organizes/is responsible for a “Feast of St. Andral”-style event tied to Strahd’s court calendar; is deeply jealous of the hold the memory of Tatyana — and by extension her present-day reincarnation — has over Strahd, and regards that reincarnation as a serious threat to be removed or permanently confined given the chance.
-
Cross-reference: this jealousy hook lines up directly with this bible’s existing Tatiana/Ireena reincarnation lineage (Tatiana / Ireena reincarnation lineage, where Ireena Kolyana is established as Tatiana’s most recent reincarnation) — worth keeping in mind if any of the three brides ever get seeded as a threat to Ireena specifically.
- [IDEA — NONCANONICAL] 2026-09-27 / 10-08 ideation (Session 11 prep): A major faction in the Vallaki timeline, separate from Ludmilla. If her bones scheme succeeds, it triggers the Feast of St. Andral (Strahd’s forces attack Vallaki — Major events in the three-day window). She’s played as hot-headed rather than calculating, partly to tell the brides apart. Considered and dropped: having her send a raid or assassination attempt at Ireena (the brides know harming Ireena would anger Strahd, and it read as too calculated for her).
Current narrative status: [IDEA — NONCANONICAL] Not yet introduced to the party.
Volenta Popofsky
Source characterization: Homebrew, adapted from the fan guide above.
Role: Youngest and newest-turned of the three brides — 113 years old, 95 of them as one of Strahd’s consorts. A Socialite and a Sadist.
Key characterization principles:
- Former Barovian sex worker who would torture and kill customers who crossed her; fled to Castle Ravenloft when this was discovered and offered herself to Strahd, who was impressed by her cruelty and turned her at 18.
- Sociopathic and genuinely childlike/petulant in most non-violent interactions — has no real empathy for anyone, believes (against explicit warnings from both Ludmilla and Rahadin) that Strahd’s love for her is unconditional and permanent.
- The most willful and chaotic of the three brides; enjoys testing boundaries with Ludmilla and Rahadin specifically, though she knows better than to actually cross Rahadin.
- Collects trophies from her kills; carries/wears a skull taken from a werewolf she killed as proof of loyalty to Strahd, which — per the fan source — has absorbed a bloodlust curse from years of use. Optional item hook, not yet adopted: if Chris wants to bring this into the campaign, it would need its own Key Items entry (a cursed mask/trophy item); flagging here rather than adding that entry unprompted.
- Goals: sees Strahd’s favor as constantly at risk despite reassurance; regards Ireena Kolyana (if the party’s Ireena ever becomes known to the brides) as her single biggest threat and would engineer her death or ruin given the chance; wants to see Barovia’s winery destroyed largely for the chaos and disruption of it, not for any strategic reason; enjoys sabotaging Anastrasya for her own amusement.
- Prefers psychological torment and games over direct combat; would rather stalk, frighten, and toy with a target than fight fairly.
Current narrative status: [IDEA — NONCANONICAL] Not yet introduced to the party.
