Isaac “Izek” Strazani

Source characterization: RAW

Role: The Baron’s mutated-armed personal enforcer

Key characterization principles:

  • CANONICAL (GM-confirmed 2026-09-24): Izek is Ireena’s brother. Not yet revealed at the table. Per the 09-19 ideation, Izek does not know they are related.
  • Functions as part of the Volokovich mansion’s defensive complication, alongside roughly 36 retained mansion guards (per raw material), for any heist-style approach to the Tome of Strahd questline (see Tome of Strahd).
  • [IDEA — NONCANONICAL] Backstory (2026-09-19 version, superseding the 2026-09-15 draft): an orphan on Vallaki’s streets who went fishing on Lake Zarovich out of hunger. One of the Winter Worm’s whirlpools pulled him down, and he touched the worm (earlier draft: touched the Heart of Darkness itself) and was infected. Because the worm slept, his parasite lay dormant for years and only became active recently — which is why the arm now looks grotesque. Vargas found or rescued him, and this bond is the root of Izek’s devotion. As a child he kept insisting there was a monster in the lake, and only Vargas believed him. He is indebted to Vargas but never calls him “father,” which would imply a claim on Victor’s title. He refers to him by title (“the Burgomaster”).
  • [IDEA — NONCANONICAL] Ireena fixation (2026-09-19): Izek has always dreamed of red-haired women — a shameful fixation he hides, since it reads as such a “Strahd move” and Vargas is fiercely anti-Strahd. He believes the woman in his dreams is the one he’s meant to be with. Per RAW, he has the Dollmaker make dolls resembling her. His interaction with Ireena hinges entirely on her hair: with it dyed black, he won’t identify her at first, and Chris does not want him to at the start. It could surface days later in-game if the dye grows out or washes off, or if he catches her unguarded. If he realizes, he tries to abduct her. Likely fight locations: the Volokovich mansion (a hush-hush prisoner basement), or a cloak-and-dagger night attack in which he hides his identity and blasts from range with his arm (eldritch-blast-style, cold/necrotic/void-themed). Ireena is unlikely to be sleeping alone, so any attempt probably sparks a fight.
  • Sibling tie: the relationship itself is now canon (2026-09-24). The details of how they were separated remain [IDEA — NONCANONICAL]: Chris’s 09-19 version has Ireena found in the Svalich Woods by Kolyan while Izek reached Vallaki as an orphan, and Michelle raised timeline concerns about it. The whirlpool/dormant-parasite backstory above was built to work either way.

Current narrative status: Not yet encountered in play. Note: the canonical sibling connection to Ireena has significant potential for the Vallaki arc — consider how and when to seed it. His red-hair fixation and possible abduction attempt read very differently once the relationship is known.

Session 10 (canonical, by reputation only): Morgantha warned the party about “the Burgomaster’s attack dog, Izek”: recognizable by a hideous, mangled arm, a spellcaster of some sort, and he has set Barovians who opposed the Burgomaster on fire. Reyna heard at the refugee camp that people are being burned and robbed. His fire magic is therefore canon; the cold/necrotic blasts for a disguised night attack remain ideation.

[IDEA — NONCANONICAL] 2026-09-27 / 10-08 ideation (Session 11 prep): On most of the party’s infiltration routes, Izek walks in on the guards or the section they’re using. The party makes a group Perception check against a combined total (roughly 30–40, TBD); success means they hear his heavy footsteps coming, failure means he surprises them (“State your business”). Combat is always possible, but explore non-combat options first. He would throw intruders in the standard town prison (not the mansion’s private one) rather than bring them to Vargas — unless he thinks they’d help Vargas’s plan. If they enter at night, they may see him leaving Blinsky’s toy shop with a satchel (collecting his dolls). During a werewolf raid on the refugee camp, he gathers guards to hold the gate and strikes only wolves that come too close; otherwise he lets the Barovians die.

Session 11 (canonical, unconfirmed link): a Vallaki gate guard said he couldn’t open the gate because “Strassney” wouldn’t let him — possibly Izek’s surname, Strazani. Moments after the party slipped in, they heard shouting at the guards, a scream and fire at the gate, then a lullaby on a grass whistle.
