Argonvost

Source characterization: RAW;, reworked timeline

Role: Dragon-in-disguise; founder and guardian of the Amber Temple; later founder-by-circumstance of the Order of the Silver Dragon

Key characterization principles:

  • A dragon disguised as a nobleman; settled near the Amber Temple specifically to guard it as “a repository of evil power” long before Strahd ever rose to power — not to fight Strahd, and without awareness the Fanes were sealed inside.
  • Ironic detail: by preventing anything from leaving the Amber Temple, his vigilance inadvertently made his order the Spring Fane’s jailer too, without ever knowing she was there.
  • Initially treats Strahd as a non-issue as long as Strahd doesn’t interfere with the Temple — a live-and-let-live posture that Saint Markovia is the one who eventually breaks by convincing him appeasement doesn’t guarantee safety.
  • Keeps the Sun Sword inside the Amber Temple itself; Markovia must prove herself worthy before he arms her and lends his support.
  • Survives Strahd’s second death; issues a call to arms afterward that recruits Reysatra (the “Silver Age” — see Cosmology).
  • Secretly maneuvered by Madam Eva into believing the idea to dissipate Amber Shards out of the Temple was his own, when her real goal was extracting the Spring Fane piece by piece.
  • Killed, along with the rest of the Silver Dragon Knights, when Strahd returns from his second death — his remains kept as a trophy in Castle Ravenloft rather than consecrated ground, which is why Strahd is able to target and destroy the order directly.
  • Optional, undecided: whether he and Katarina/Madam Eva had a personal history (courtly acquaintance at minimum, possibly an unconsummated romance predating her transformation).

Current narrative status: Historical figure, deceased for centuries by the party’s present day. Not yet encountered; his Holt (per the party’s card-reading tracker) is tied to the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind’s location. Session 9 update: Ireena’s in-fiction guidance narrowed this further — the Holt (“a house led by a dragon, died over a hundred years ago”) is reachable via an offshoot of the Luna River.
